Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE; Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of 2 Guatemalan and 2 Indonesian hand carved and painted wooden masks. The 2 Guatemalan festival masks feature a pink humanoid face, with large eyes with an amusing red and black feline-creature perched atop the anthropomorphic visage, and a stylized horse mask with yellow and black pigments. The 2 Indonesian masks depict characters from the Indonesian dance drama known as 'wayang topeng' a dance performance to present ancient tales, usually about ancient or mythical heroes or kings. The black half-mask has a chubby human visage with slit eyes and button nose. The white example features a bold visage presenting bulging eyes with slits beneath, incised brows and a diamond shaped 'flame' set into the brow. The lower jaw is absent to allow the wearer to talk and drink more easily. Size of largest (pink mask): 10.75" L x 6.75" W (27.3 cm x 17.1 cm)
