Western Europe, Germany, ca. 19th century CE; East Asia, China, ca. 20th century CE. A fine pair of antique brass instruments: a German flugelhorn and a Chinese wood and brass instrument known as a souna. The flugelhorn is like a trumpet but has a wider interior chamber, and the 3 piston valves have the same fingering system as trumpets, but slightly different playing characteristics and mouthpiece, but most trumpet players can easily play the flugelhorn with little training. This instrument is missing the mouthpiece and has some wear that makes it unsuitable for playing but is a perfect piece to display or restore. The souna has a cylindrical wooden body and 7 raised fingerholes on the front and one thumbhole on the reverse with a metal thumb rest below. The brass bell and the brass neck are a separate piece, and the original reed whistle mouthpiece has been replaced by a western style woodwind mouthpiece with a reed with a brass ligature and brass cap cover. Size of souna: 16.75" L x 4.5" W (42.5 cm x 11.4 cm); flugelhorn: 15.5" L x 7" W (39.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
