Western Europe, France, ca. mid-19th century CE. This is a fine French style flageolet made from cocuswood, nickel brass, and an elephant ivory mouthpiece. The instrument is comprised of 4 detachable segments and a whistle-shaped mouthpiece made of bone. This instrument is like a recorder and flute and fell out of fashion and use by the early 20th century, as it was largely replaced by tin whistles in orchestras. The instrument is unsigned and comes with the original wood and leather case with a red felt interior. Size (flageolet): 15.5" L x 1.5" W (39.4 cm x 3.8 cm); (case): 9.5" L x 4" W (24.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
