**First Time At Auction**
French pastel portrait of a lady, ca. 1842. Inscription on verso includes the date 1842. A lovely half-length French pastel portrait of an attractive young lady who is finely dressed in a royal blue dress with puff sleeves, a form-fitting bodice, and a gold buckled belt to accentuate her slender waist as well as a white diaphanous shawl pinned with a gold brooch and elegant dangling earrings. The sitter gazes out at the viewer with a beautiful visage - magnetic brown eyes, arched brows, an aquiline nose, bow-shaped lips, a dimpled chin, alabaster skin, and centrally parted, pulled back brunette locks. Soft gestural marks in the background rendered in an Impressionist manner suggest soft glowing light. A lovely 19th century portrait mounted under glass in a wooden frame. Condition
Portrait is mounted in a wooden frame under glass. Artwork has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very good condition, perhaps with slight wear commensurate with age, though the colors and drawing are strong. Frame has scuffs and nicks as shown. Board backing the pastel shows some bowing and age wear. We would recommend securing better to framing. Old labels on verso, one with an inscription that is difficult to discern; however, the date "1842" is clear.
