19th century women’s magazines published fashion plates - wonderful illustrations of women’s clothing that were intended to guide the reader towards the latest styles. "The Lady’s Magazine and Museum" was born after two older ladies magazines entitled, "The Lady’s Magazine" and "The Lady’s Monthly Museum" came together. Both of these early magazines began in England in the late 18th century; however, by the 1830s, recognizing that they were facing great competition, the pair merged into one publication, continuing until 1847.
