East Asia, Japan, Meiji, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful black ink and water color painting showing a rural scene of 4 children and an older man beside a wall as another adult male sits beneath a straw hut. Featuring subtle hues of green, blue, pink, brown, and grey, the lovely image perhaps depicts a school with 3 young boys dancing around at the gate while 1 adult looks at them admonishingly and an older child stands to the right. A body of water, perhaps a river or a lake, with a canoe is shown to the right of the painting and a large pine tree towers over the hut in the lower left corner. In the background of the left side, a tall mountain rises over the charming scene. The title of the piece is inscribed in Japanese in the upper right corner and the artist's seal can be seen in the lower left. Size without frame: 10.75" L x 7.25" W (27.3 cm x 18.4 cm); Size with frame: 16.625" L x 13.25" W (42.2 cm x 33.7 cm)
