Western Europe, or United States, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. This fabulous crossbow gun is a real oddity but a beauty! It features an ornately hand-carved wooden stock with a steel barrel and gilt brass ornaments and fittings. The wood stock is wonderfully designed with a large grip and a base with an upward curving lip. A scrolling vegetal relief extends from the stock butt across the foregrip, and the uncarved surfaces are textured. An iron ladder sight, a foldable piece on the top before the barrel, provides the shooter an articulating slider to calculate range. A nickel-brass maskette of a beast’s face adorns the stock below the sight. The firing mechanism is comprised of a spring clip and steel barrel with a flight groove. Under the barrel is a trigger within a brass guard. At the tip of the barrel are protruding limbs with a wire drawstring to draw back to the clip for the trigger to release the projectile. Gilded brass fittings adorn this luxurious weapon, and the bow is attached to a blue silk cushion with gold trim upon a wooden base. A small plaque on the cushion is engraved “CL WHEELER” which may be the maker or owner of this crossbow. Size of base: 24" L x 15" W (61 cm x 38.1 cm); size of bow: 16" L x 11" W x 7" H (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 17.8 cm); quality of gold in gilding: 2%
