Western Europe, probably Spain (possibly New Spain), ca. structure is 19th century CE and vellum lining is 16th to 17th century CE. A rare and sizable wooden chest of rectangular form with a trapezoidal lid hinged on one side and 2 long horizontal feet near each shorter end. The front, side, and top panels are skillfully covered in early modern vellum pages of Latin hymns, penned with both the letter-batarde lyrics and their corresponding bars of music in hues of black and red. Luxurious maroon and gold fabric adorned with decorative brass bolts line the edges of the box with lovely tassels hanging from the top and bottom and additional fabric forming a strip down the center of the top and front panels and covering the front of the feet. The interior boasts a bright yellow paper lining decorated with an abstract motif. This remarkable artifact was likely used to hold the vestments of a church official.
