19th C. European, Portrait of a Woman, oil on wood panel, mounted in a custom (Richard Tobey) burl wood veneer frame. A beautiful portrait of an elegant woman donning a long veil of diaphanous white fabric trimmed with golden embroidery, a Renaissance Revival russet red coat or gown with ribbon ties along the sleeves, over a lace-collared white blouse, and a lustrous drop earring. The sitter is presented half-length, turned to her right and holding a single blooming flower, probably intended to symbolize her fertility, in her grasp. She gazes forward with a dreamy visage composed of hazel eyes framed by arched brows, an aquiline nose, a peachy complexion, and pursed full lips. All is skillfully rendered alla prima - a wet on wet approach whereby layers of wet paint are applied on layers of wet paint to achieve a rich, lustrous effect, and mounted in a custom Richard Tobey frame embellished with burl wood veneers. Size (painting): 14.125" L x 9" W (35.9 cm x 22.9 cm) Size (frame): 23.4" L x 18.125" W (59.4 cm x 46 cm)
