Anonymous, Europe, ca. 1820 to 1840. A stunning early 19th century landscape painting depicting Northern Italy and the Alps mounted in a carved giltwood frame with elaborately decorated corners resolving in elegant floral vine motifs. The artist welcomes the viewer to imagine standing upon a clearing among the flourishing foliage at the lower right while listening to the flowing waters of a rocky stream bed to the left and gazing upon the meandering expanse of sunlit countryside dotted by charming vernacular buildings with a body of water (perhaps Lake Como) beneath the majestic Alps and azure skies above. A finely painted landscape created during a period when artists from all over Europe discovered the beauty of Italy's awe inspiring views.
