Europe, ca. 19th century. A gorgeous brass relief of the Madonna and Child surrounded by a lovely decorative frame comprised of a pointed arch with Doric columns on either side, each topped with pointed trefoil finials and connected by an Arabic arch. Standing atop a pedestal of clouds, the Virgin is draped in voluminous robes as she holds the Christ child on her right hip. A snake is shown below her feet; a common trope in Mary's iconography and symbolic of her victory over the Devil, as well as her contrast to Eve. Golden beams of light fall from a ornamental rounded arch, just above the lovely pairs' haloed heads. The top of the arched frame is decorated with a starburst design, as well as six volutes. Below, next to the pointed arches, a brick-like pattern gives the impression that this relief depicts a shrine one may find whilst meandering down the winding streets of a European city. The bottom of the frame features two vertically-striped bases flanking a design of two leaves and an oval. A small hole is at the very bottom of the lustrous piece, likely for attachment. Size: 3.75" W x 6.875" H (9.5 cm x 17.5 cm)
This beautiful example is fastened to a paper back that has a hook at the top for suspension and is lightly inscribed with the letters L, J, M, and C.
