Europe, Western or Northern, ca. late 19th century CE. A remarkable brass dagger decorated with an impressively cast, copper-silver alloy, Swiss sixteenth-century (Holbein) style sheath, and decorated brass belt. The gorgeous red velvet-lined sheath features a raised relief battle scene on its front in which two tall bearded men - one mounting a small, likely dead, boy - in armor and plumed helmets, hold pikes diagonally while flanking an elaborately dressed woman, perhaps the boy's mother, who kneels, begging for mercy. The end of the relief where the sheath meets the handle is embellished with a vertical border comprised of a classical Roman garland and central visage and attached to a gorgeous belt adorned with a pattern of openwork petaloid and geometric designs. The lustrous, silver-hued blade showcases a high central ridge and sharp tapered point, while the black-painted wooden handle bears a brass flared top and bottom with a petite gold hued knob at the base. Rendered in the "Holbein" style of the late 16th century, this stunning weapon is historical proof that looks can kill!
