Enrico Coleman (Italian, 1846-1911). Oil on canvas. Untitled landscape. Ca. 1870s. Signed "E. Coleman" on lower right. A very fine oil painting depicting a picturesque landscape featuring a quaint cottage surrounded by a field of wildflowers and a white picket fence, with a grove of trees adorning the middle ground, a blue body of water just beyond it, and a tranquil expanse of golden sky dotted by feathery clouds above. Enrico Coleman was known for his depictions of the Campagna Romana - beautiful countryside bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the southwest and with rivers Tiber and Aniene running through it - as well as the Agro Pontino with its coastal lagoons, the mouth of the river Astura at its northwest border, and the Tyrrhenian Sea not too far away as well. Size: 12.25" L x 18" W (31.1 cm x 45.7 cm)
Enrico Coleman was an Italian artist, though of British nationality, whose father was the British artist Charles Coleman who relocated to Rome in the 1830's and married a famous model from Subiaco named Fortunata Segadori (also Segatori). Enrico was the fourth child of this union and his brother Francesco Coleman was also a painter, although lesser known.
Many Enrico Coleman works have sold at auction including "Cattle in the Campagna" which sold at Bonhams New Bond Street "19th Century European Paintings, Drawings, and Watercolours" in 2007 for $37,306. Coleman's "Roma, il trasporto del fieno con il ponte Nomentano e il Monte Sacro sullo sfondo", 1881 hammered for $13,824 at Minerva Auctions, 26 November 2015, lot number 187, illustrated on page 83 of the catalogue.
