Northwestern Europe, England, Sheffield, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome Rio Grande or Bowie style knife made by Walker and Hall, comprised of a steel blade, deer antler grip, ornate nickel-brass pommel, and a leather sheath. The broad blade is stamped with the Walker and Hall maker mark and flag pennant on the ricasso, just above an ovoid guard. The tang is covered with a polished antler and then capped by the repousse nickel pommel that features a pair of animal heads, likely boars, with a foliate finial. This is beautifully crafted with great toning and patina! A black leather sheath with a nickel cuff fits over the blade. Walker and Hall was established in 1845 by George Walker, and in 1853 Henry Hall joined the business. The style of maker mark on the blade was used between 1860 and 1900. Size in sheath: 16.5" L x 2.8" W (41.9 cm x 7.1 cm); blade: 9.5" L x 1.65" W (24.1 cm x 4.2 cm)
