Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th century CE. An elk leather storage pouch with lengthy tassels and decorative glass beads and feathers. Three of the glass trade beads are thick barrel shapes with striated and opaque hues of black, white, red, and teal hues; one forms the drawstring for the cover flap, and a smaller opaque white bead attached to cord tip, helps secure a few turkey or pheasant feathers in place. Elk leather is the most supple and soft of hides, compared to cow, and exceptionally durable and resistant to cracking, as this example can attest to! The bag may have been used for storing tobacco or other special items and is displayed in a modern Riker case. Size (pouch): 6" L x 5" W (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm); (case): 16.125" L x 12.125" W (41 cm x 30.8 cm)
