European, Continental School, 19th century. A bust-length, oil on canvas portrait of a woman holding a bible with a Cross adorning the cover in her left hand and a gold writing implement in her right hand. She sits upon a red chair beside a table upon which an open journal rests. The sitter presents with a mesmerizing visage and elegant garments. A refined lady, she wears a dress of deep sapphire blue hues - the lustrous fabric likely satin or silk - with a white lace collar and cuffs - as well as a navy blue shawl. A lovely golden brooch adorns the center of her lace collar. Her attractive visage is comprised of captivating blue eyes below neatly manicured arched brows, an aquiline nose, pursed heart-shaped coral pink lips, and an alabaster complexion, all crowned by a centrally-parted, pulled back brunette coiffure. Dramatic lighting graces her face and hands, and the painting is set in an ornately carved golden frame. Condition
Craquelure throughout. Painting shows age wear with abraded areas and losses to pigment. It would benefit from professional cleaning and restoration. Upon close inspection, it is possible to see the beautiful details - the patterns of the fabric of her dress and the lovely lace collar and cuffs. The canvas was relined and the stretchers were replaced. The frame shows surface wear, nicks/chips, age cracks, and repaired areas. However, the elaborate floral embellishment is still quite impressive.
