Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States/Canada, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) or Coastal Salish, ca. 1870s. A collection of cedar wood figurines, including two maternal figures holding babies, a tall figure gazing upward, and a shaman wearing a zoomorphic headdress/mask. These antique pieces show faint remnants of pigments, with tiny drilled holes on the tops of the heads, likely used for securing textile hats - one still holds tiny fibers in the pierced area, further suggesting this. The hands of the four presumed male figures have holes, indicating they once held separate implements such as boat paddles or other tools. Their posture suggests these figures may have originally been seated in a model canoe. This is a rare and likely the oldest version of such figures we have encountered. Size of largest figure: 1" W x 5.5" H (2.5 cm x 14 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand
Provenance: from a Denver, Colorado, USA, fine art gallery; ex-Skinner Auction, Boston, Massachsetts, USA
