North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Civil War era, ca. 1860s CE. A fine collection of 3 mold blown glass flasks that date to the American Civil War era, all with symbols of unity. The first is an aqua blue calabash flask with a wide, and stable flat base, rounded body, and a tall neck. One side is embossed with a shield surrounded by stars and olive branches, within the shield is a pair of disembodied clasped hands above a masonic symbol and the word "UNION" above. On the reverse is an eagle facing right holding a banner in its beak, with a shield and arrows below, and "A.R.S." for the proprietor A. R. Samuels of Philadelphia Keystone Glass Works. The other two flasks are nearly identically embossed with a clasped hands within the shield, but the eagle on the reverse lacks the marking for Keystone Glass Works. The larger of the flasks was part of the collection of Charles Gardner and bears his collection label and inventory number. Size (calabash flask): 5" W x 8.75" H (12.7 cm x 22.2 cm)
The largest flask has several inventory labels including one for the Gardner collection: #2082. Charles Gardner was a renowned glass collector and boasted the world's most complete collection of American mouthblown bottles. He co-authored the book with Marian Klamkin "American Glass Bottles" in 1977.
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, before 2000; (largest flask): ex-Charles B. Gardner collection
