East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A fantastic officer's hat made of bamboo and silk fabric with a domed and conical shape. The top is capped with a finial consisting of a coral sphere surmounted on a granulated brass spacer with a brass openwork surrounding a cylinder-shaped jadeite stone. Orange-red silk tassels are suspended from the finial as well. White silk is stretched over the bamboo frame, and the rim is covered with a silver and blue ribbon. The interior is lined with red fabric, a stiff sweat band rim, and a blue chin strap. The color of the finial stone - known as a "hat sphere" - was the most important piece and indicated the officer’s rank. Solid red, such as the color of this coral, was used to designate a second-grade rank. The lightweight material would be ideal for summer use, and winter hats would be made with fur or velvet. Great pride and care went into creating these hats, which is evident given the great condition of this piece! Size: 13.25" W x 7.5" H (33.7 cm x 19 cm)
