- Lot Description
East Asia, China, Qing dynasty, ca. late 19th century CE. A magnificent hand-carved wood panel of rectangular form depicting a densely decorated scene of an imperial procession in high relief embellished with crimson and black pigments, as well as a lustrous gilding. A long-bearded emperor and heavily bejeweled empress sit at a table at the center of the intricate narrative, beneath a huge pagoda roof that extends to include a series of female attendees who surround them and above two petite servants who are holding up vases. Both adorned in tiaras, the sweet couple turns towards one another, suggesting that this may be a sort of celebratory procession for a wedding or anniversary, as two of crowned women stand on either side of the pair. The female attendees stand in two rows, all wearing floor-length robes and pigtail-like coiffures as they bow towards the royal couple, further emphasizing the pair's central position. A door stands at the end of the attendees on both sides, beneath where the pagoda roof ends. Several shorter figures, perhaps servants, crowd around both of the doors, hurrying forward to participate in the procession. Gilding quality: 14.5 to 18% gold; Size: 47.75" W x 8.375" H (121.3 cm x 21.3 cm)
Outside the palace roof, more guests make their way to the celebration with each side featuring a seated figure in a cart being pushed by a bearded man wearing a hat amidst another group of bowing women. Both ends of the elaborate procession display a king's guard on a horse, dressed in armor with swirling sleeves as he holds long implements or weapons. An ornately carved background of houses, trees, and store fronts decorates the area outside of the pagoda roof, and an annular drill hole is featured at the bottom of the piece.
