East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A monumental, finely carved marble head of a Bodhisattva presenting a tranquil visage of closed eyes, elegantly arched brows that lead to a naturalistic nose, gently smiling full lips, soft rounded cheeks, a delicate chin, and elongated earlobes. All is topped by a magnificent coiffure with a rolled curls framing the forehead, a pair of interfacing curlicues at the center, long tendrils gracing the ears, a neatly combed section raised into a lofty bun adorned by a diadem, and finally a magnificent leafy lotus blossom headpiece crowning her presence. In addition to this sculpture's impressive artistry and the expert technique displayed, the marble itself is inherently beautiful, replete with soft, glowing white hues that imbue the sculpture with an almost ethereal elegance. Size: 8.9" W x 15.7" H (22.6 cm x 39.9 cm); 20" H (50.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road, this piece is no exception. Bodhisattvas are associated with compassion and mercy - their long ears significant, because they rescues all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering.
