East Asia, China, Late Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine cast-brass opium or tobacco water-pipe with removable parts and a boar hair cleaning brush! The pipe has a removable receptacle, a cylindrical opium storage container with hinged lid, and a tubular piece to store another tool such as tweezers. The lengthy stem and mouthpiece curves upward, and a red cord is wrapped from the neck to a vertical tab on the canister body. Each side of the pipe is engraved with a scene of figures dressed in traditional robes, seated playing instruments or eating in a pastoral setting.
