Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A handsome hand-carved statue of the Buddha on a lotus pedestal or throne that has weathered other time. The Buddha is seated in full lotus with his legs crossed, one hand positioned so that it rested in his lap, and the other slightly held outward, perhaps making a mudra hand gesture. The head is finely carved with eyes cast downwards and a slight smile. His ears are elongated from wearing heavy jewelry, touching his shoulders to represent his ability to hear cries of suffering. He wears his hair in a tightly curled coiffure with individual nodes around a central ushnisha point. This piece has great signs of age and exposure to the elements which add a nice aged and weathered energy to the tranquil Buddha. Size: 6.5" L x 5.5" W x 21" H (16.5 cm x 14 cm x 53.3 cm); 27.6" H (70.1 cm) on included custom stand.
