Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome hand-carved wooden Mandalay depiction of a monk, perhaps one of the main disciples of Buddha, either Maudgalyayana or Sariputra. He kneels with his robes flowing over his legs and across one shoulder. The robes are inlaid with glass shards in glimmering pink, red, green, and white in foliate patterns. The lacquered wood is painted with a gilt wash that is nicely weathered, but has large remaining areas of glimmering gold. The tranquil face is painted with white, red, and black pigments, and a bald head. Mandalay artists appreciated realism, particularly when depicting the facial features and way the many folds of the robe cascade from the left shoulder over the body Size: 8.5" L x 9" W x 11.25" H (21.6 cm x 22.9 cm x 28.6 cm)
Maudgalyayana and Sariputra were ordained monks and studied under the Buddha. Sariputra became a chief arahant (a spiritual practitioner who has realized certain high stages of attainment) who was renowned for his wisdom and teaching. He is depicted in the Theravada tradition as one of the most important disciples of the Buddha. Maudgalyayana became a foremost arahant who was acclaimed for his supernatural powers such as psychic abilities.
