This lot is oversized / heavy and will require 3rd party shipping - please inquire before bidding.

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay, ca. early 20th century CE. A lacquered and gilt wood sculpture of the Buddha, standing upright on a circular lotus base, which was likely part of a larger pedestal. His hands are positioned at his sides, with a medicinal fruit held in his right hand, a feature specific to Burmese depictions of the Buddha. He wears flowing robes, intricately carved with drapes and folds, inlaid with glittering glass shards. His downcast eyes are inlaid with enamel, lending a lifelike quality to the piece. The posture represents the Buddha standing after his enlightenment, facing the Bodhi tree for one week without blinking. The gilt statue was perhaps displayed in a temple in Mandalay, where the regional style was characterized by visually stunning and luxurious religious art. Size: 23" L x 7" W x 51" H (58.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 129.5 cm); 56.5" H (143.5 cm) on included custom stand; gold quality: 44% to 47% (equivalent to 10K+ to 11K+)
Provenance: private Truchas, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Antique Buddhas, Netherlands, in 2002 or 2003
