Western Europe, probably British, ca. 1828-1839. A beautiful 19th century British portrait of an elegant woman presented bust-length and wearing a stunning white gown with an Empire waist and a shawl cascading around her fitted bodice. The painter skillfully captured the youth and beauty of this sitter. Her visage is exquisite, comprised of a peachy complexion, rosy cheeks, red bow-shaped lips, an aquiline nose, arched brows framing her big blue eyes, and a lovely updo of brunette curled tresses. The landscape in the background conveys nature's potential for romantic theatricality with its dramatic shadows, rich dark hues, and dynamic brushwork to convey movement. All is mounted in an antique gilded frame embellished with fret patterns as well as leaf and berry motifs.
