Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful and ornate Dayak "Mandau" sword handle that is hand-carved from deer horn and bound with woven rattan cord. The intricate carved surface depicts an eagle and a dragon head, with swirling and spiraling shapes. A conical finial or pommel cap protrudes from the curved tip. The rest of the grip is cylindrical and hollow for hafting to a steel blade, and the fiber cords are tightly bound to facilitate grip. A rich a smooth patina has formed throughout the antler and cord on this exquisite piece! Size: 3.875" L x 2.875" H (9.8 cm x 7.3 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.
