Native American, Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Canada, Haida, Tsimshian, or Bella Coola, ca. late 19th century CE. A striking janus-headed, hand-carved and hand-painted wooden rattle, hollow and joined from two pieces, the interior filled with percussive rattles, fitted to the animal hide wrapped handle below. The pair of visages complement one another quite nicely; on one side, an anthropomorphic face presents prominent wide-opened eyes boldly delineated in low relief with dramatically arched brows above, a minimally incised nose, an open mouth comprised of large lips revealing teeth, four-fingered hands held up over his chin, zoomorphic profile heads flanking his hands, and eye or perhaps feather motifs flanking his eyes - all highlighted with green, red, black, and white paint. On the verso is a prone spotted green frog or toad with large eyes and a red mouth. Nine tufts of long black animal hair emerge from perforations lining the forehead. Just imagine how these locks would move as the rattle shook! Size: 5.5" W x 12" H (14 cm x 30.5 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Rattles like this example were used during rituals. They are traditionally spherical in form with two faces, one on each side, and the carving is generally done in low relief as we see here - allowing for a rich interplay between positive and negative spaces. Some scholars believe that that such globular rattles were owned and used by shamans who were employed with the privileged task of calling upon spirit helpers to assist during healing and divining rituals. Scholar Bill Holm has written that the rounded, hemispheric form of these rattles is associated with the shape of the human skull, and therefore a visual metaphor symbolizing the shaman's transmutation between the living and spiritual worlds.
