Western Europe, Austria / North America, United States, New York, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a fascinating piece of porcelain commemorating the "union" of Hawaii and the United States - the transfer of government occurring after a coup that illegally overthrew the last Hawaiian queen. The front side is glazed with a deep cobalt blue rim with gold leaf foliate and scrolling designs. The center of the tondo basin is painted with the royal Hawaiian coat of arms and below the flags of the United States and the Hawaiian Islands, draped with foliage and leis. This plate may have been a commemorative piece used by an important political figure visiting the islands or as a souvenir. The dish was made by the Hapsburg China company, a USA importer of Austrian porcelain. The "M+Z" and Austrian double headed eagle mark on the verso was used from 1884 to 1909 by the factory owned by Moritz Zdekauer Bank, famous exporters to North and South America. Size: 10.5" Diameter (26.7 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
The coat of arms has many elements and slight changes over the years have marked eras of historical significance throughout Hawaii's colonial period, annexation, and eventual statehood. The first royal Hawaiian coat of arms was commissioned and designed in London in 1843 by Timoteo Ha'alilio, private secretary to Kings Kauikeaouli, Kamehameha III. This version of the coat of arms on the plate was adopted in 1850. The quartered shields have red, white and blue stripes representing the eight inhabited Hawaiian Islands. The other two escutcheon corners include a sacred puloulou staff, and crossed spears on the central green shield, all surmounted by the crown of Hawaii. On the right is Kamanawa standing with a spear; he was a high chief and supporter of King Kamehameha I. On the left is Kamanawa's twin brother Kame'eiamoku, also a high chief and Counselor to Kamehameha I, holding a feather kahili. In the banner is the motto: "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono" which is roughly translated into English as "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" or "The Survival of the Nation is Warranted by Justice." The crest underwent changes throughout the years to subtly reflect the shifting political climate of the Islands in relation to the United States.
