North America, USA, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A delightful piece of Americana, a wooden carousel figure in the form of a deer. The deer is constructed from multiple carved pieces of wood fitted neatly together and brightly painted. Iron antlers serve as handles, while an iron socket and tiny iron "stirrups" for placing the feet also feature. The figure is Philadelphia style - meaning carved with realism - and is from a "menagerie carousel", meaning that it included animals who were not horses. This example has been painted at least twice - once a shining white and once a more realistic color scheme - and the socket indicates that it was likely mounted on a carousel where it could move up and down on a pole instead of just being spun on the wheel in a stationary position. With this beautiful figure you can celebrate the turn of the last century, when there were 10,000 wooden carousels delighting children and adults alike throughout the USA. Today there are only 150. Size: 8.75" L x 47" W x 51.75" H (22.2 cm x 119.4 cm x 131.4 cm)

Condition
The figure is made of multiple pieces of wood fitted together so joints are visible. There is some cracking from weathering, but the piece is intact and stable. There is wear to pigment commensurate with age, and the figure has been painted at least twice in the past. The glass eyes have some light scratching but are in nice condition. Rich patina on all surfaces. The figure stands on its own unassisted.
