North America, United States, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A charming piece of folk art commemorating a steadfast workhorse made from wood, complete with leather and metal tack. The horse is of a minimalist presentation, with planks as legs riveted to the wooden flanks. Pieces of a fibrous rope form the tail, and a leather panel nailed to the neck forms the mane. Iron chains and leather panels create the bridle and harness. The red cylinder attached to the harness chain has a ring that may have even attached to a separate cart. All pieces appear to be foraged or found, to create this statue that may have been a child's toy to sit on or even a sign for a farm or roadside attraction. This piece has nice signs of age and weathering. Size: 47" L x 5" W x 46" H (119.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 116.8 cm); 54.5" H (138.4 cm) on included custom stand.
