Alfred William Hunt (British, 1830-1896). "First Railroad in England" ink drawing on paper, mid-19th century CE. A lovely drawing of a locomotive riding through the British countryside created in ink, gouache, and pencil. An inscription on the mat below reads, "First Railroad in England. Sketched by Alfred W. Hunt about 1835 - Sepia Sketch by Alfred W. Hunt, London, England, about 1835 - Best wishes - Edwin Hunt Frost and Marguerite Scribner Frost." Size: drawing measures 7.5" W x 4.625" H (19 cm x 11.7 cm); 11.875" W x 8.625" H (30.2 cm x 21.9 cm) w/ cardstock backing; 13.5" W x 11.25" H (34.3 cm x 28.6 cm) w/ mat
Given that Alfred Hunt was born in 1830, this date is not likely accurate. Rather the composition was probably created ca. 1860s to 1880s. Just who are the people who signed the dedication on this piece? Edwin Hunt Frost (1873-1952) was an 8th generation New Englander, part of a family that made important contributions in politics, publishing, and medicine. His wife, Marguerite Scribner Frost (1876-1944), was a poet best remembered for her "Love of Earth" (1937) - a compilation of 93 poems and 47 illustrations. In addition, she was a visual artist who drew bookplates and painted watercolors and oils that were well-received in a New York City exhibition.
