West Africa, Ghana, Akan, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning pendant comprised of 72% gold (equivalent to 15K+) presenting a finely delineated visage adorning a central boss and presenting details delineated via repousse as well as with applied gold wires. The brows and hairline are rendered with rope-patterned passages; eyes and open mouth are outlined in slender gold wires; eyes and nose modeled in repousse, and gold granule pairs accent each corner of the mouth. This fabulous face is surrounded by two circular registers of concentric bands alternating with two bands of openwork triangular motifs. The circumference of the ornament is trimmed with a rope-patterned border, and twin loops comprised of mini folded discs that are also adorned by concentric bands - akin to those of the central disc - furnish either side. A stunning example! Size: 2.375" W from loop to loop x 3.25" H (6 cm x 8.3 cm); weight: 27.4 grams; gold quality: 72%, equivalent to 15K+.
According to Doug Stewart's article "West African Gold: Out of the Ordinary" published in Smithsonian Magazine (December 2005), "There’s a very elaborate tradition of chieftaincy or kingship in Ghana that’s still thriving," says art historian Doran H. Ross, author of the exhibition’s catalog. For centuries among the Akan peoples of southern Ghana, kings and their retinues have proclaimed their status in spirited public festivals, where they parade with dazzling gold regalia: necklaces, rings, bracelets, amulets, even gilded muskets and finials for umbrellas (used to shade parading chiefs). The display of regalia today may be as lavish as it’s ever been, says Ross, a regular at Akan festivals since 1974."
