Oyate Waste Win (Oyate Nation, 20th c). "Sioux Fight Cheyenne" mixed media on paper, ca. 1980s. Signed and titled in ink at upper right, a fascinating pictograph-inspired mixed media work entitled "Sioux Fight Cheyenne" by artist Oyate Waste Win of the Oyate Nation which is part of the Seven Council Fires of the Great Sioux Nation. The composition depicts a battle between the Sioux and the Cheyenne with a presumably wounded Cheyenne warrior tumbling off his golden horse, his rifle dropping to the ground, a shield still in his grip. On the right are three Sioux warriors firing their rifles at their enemies, and on the left is the head of an oncoming white horse with a glimpse of another warrior wielding a sword and shield. The image is rendered with a lively style, a vibrant color palette, and wonderful passages of horse shoe motifs stippling the background. Set in an attractive custom frame and ready to display.Size: 7.125" L x 12.375" W (18.1 cm x 31.4 cm) Size of frame: 11.2" L x 16.625" W (28.4 cm x 42.2 cm)
Randy Lee White (also known as Whitehorse, b. Lubbock, Texas, 1951). Mixed Media. 1980. Three fascinating pictograph-inspired mixed media works by artist Randy Lee White. Each of the three works is each signed "R. Lee White '80" with a horse head motif. One sheet depicts two pairs of indigenous peoples and one figure in profile; another depicts a dramatic conflict between a European on horseback and native peoples, all of whom wield weapons; and finally, the third depicts a native chief or warrior donning an elaborate outfit and headdress with several horse heads and figures' legs surrounding him. While it is possible that these were intended to be distinct works, they also work well as a trio as they were created with the same style, complementary motifs, lively color palette, and a wonderful stippled background.
