North America, United States, ca. 1977 CE. This is a charming and unique sculpture of a walrus, hand carved from beech wood with copper sheet tusks. The face is deeply incised and polished, with rounded cheeks, furrowed brow, glaring eyes, flared nostrils, and jutting chin. The tusks are made from rolled copper sheets that are riveted down one side then placed in sockets. The verso is open and hollowed, exposing the wooden support beam and the openings for the tusks and stand. The sturdy brass stand is stamped on the underside with the mark "1977 BY SARREID LTD." We think he looks rather cuddly and could be a charming sculpture, or even a hat stand! Size: 12.75" L x 7.25" W (32.4 cm x 18.4 cm); 17.45" H (44.3 cm) on included custom stand.
