Camilo Otero (Spanish, 1932-2003). Hand-carved wooden sculpture, ca. 1970s. An abstract biomorphic sculpture carved from natural wood by Spanish artist Carlos Otero and signed (incised) above one foot of the piece. An outstanding sculptor, painter, draftsman, and engraver, Otero was a true modernist. This piece is magical for its curvaceous form which mesmerizes when viewed from any angle. Otero played with positive and negative space so fluently, and while the volumes are captivating, so are the surfaces which he meticulously carved with various gestural marks and textures. A unique biomorphic sculpture by Camilo Otero that while abstract also evokes living - whether human, zoomorphic, and/or botanical - forms Size: 5.375" L x 7.75" W x 13.125" H (13.7 cm x 19.7 cm x 33.3 cm)
About the artist: Camilo Otero initiated his artistic training in Galicia, Spain and in 1947, began studies at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Otero had his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. In the mid-1960s, he traveled to Paris and Rome, and his artwork evolved toward his signature provocative biomorphic style. Otero is also known for his zoomorphic sculptures such as the stone bull that presided over the entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid for many years. Despite travels throughout his youth, Otero was born and passed away in the same Spanish city, Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia which is also the culmination of the famous pilgrimage route, Camino de Santiago.
