Central Asia, India, Kutchi, ca. 1960. A handmade traditional dance skirt made from beautiful violet purple cotton cloth with some of the most elaborate hand-embroidery and Banjara Gypsy mirror work - not to be confused with simpler examples that date later. The substantive and intricate embroidery imbues the skirt with a plethora of colors - fuchsia, apple green, sunburst orange, strawberry red, rose, royal blue, lemon yellow, vermilion, wine red, and more - depicting abstract floral and geometric motifs amdist countless circular mirror elements as well as a zig-zag border painstakingly created by folding and sewing various colored fabrics. A very impressive vintage Kutchi skirt. Size: 36.5" L x 35" W (92.7 cm x 88.9 cm)
Provenance: private Poos collection, Overland Park, Kansas, USA; purchased directly from the artist in 2010 - One of the largest privately held quilt and textile collections in the world, the Poos Collection has evolved over 50 years and through extensive travels to allow for original or point of source acquisition. The collection includes international textiles and garments with an emphasis on West African textiles such as adire, aso oke, kente, and ewe woven prestige cloths as well as textiles from Central Asia like this example.
