Pacific Northwest, Canada, British Columbia, Sechelt, ca. 1930s CE; Lawrence Jackson (1929 to 2008), ca. 1958 CE. This is a fabulous hand-carved wooden totem pole and commemorative piece to celebrate a tribal potlach. The base is appointed with the name of the town and province. Flanking the main totem are two bear and whale shaped panels, with the whale head forming the base and bear heads pointed inward with bared teeth. The totem pole is carved from a single piece with the wings attached separately. The base is formed by a bear-eagle spirit hybrid - the bear's paws are replaced by bird talons. Stacked atop is an orca whale, and a thunder bird with wings outstretched. All is painted in red, blue, yellow, brown, white, and black. The verso and base of the panels have handwritten pencil labels including "1958 July Ceremonies BC." Size: 15" L x 4" W x 24" H (38.1 cm x 10.2 cm x 61 cm)
The potlatch ban in Canada began in 1885 and ended in 1951, only a few years before this totem was created. Before this time, arrests and sentences could be 2 to 3 months in prison for holding these cultural celebrations. However, enforcing the potlatch ban was not easy for the Canadian government and many Native people found loopholes and held potlatches during Christmas or other holidays under the guise of celebrating those European traditions.
