Attributed to Jean Calogero (Italian, 1922-2001). Oil on canvas, ca. 1950s. Inspired by the Moulin Rouge cabaret of the Montmartre district of Paris, this painting captures the mysterious quality of the famous Parisian musical landmark. Note the vibrant color palette and theatrical juxtapositions of this bold composition, featuring the female mask donning a floral hat who is dramatically close to the picture plane, with blossoms and a parasol in the foreground, the Moulin Rouge in the distance, and abstract impasto passages above. Jean Calogero is beloved for his dreamy, Surrealist works. Masks, like the one prominently featured in this painting, allude to several dimensions that simultaneously hide and reveal the subject, and were among Calogero's favorite themes. Size of painting: 10" L x 8" W (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm) Size of frame: 17.125" L x 15.125" W (43.5 cm x 38.4 cm)
Jean Calogero (1922 - 2001) had a few successful early exhibitions in Rome and Sicily in 1945. Two years later, he went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Calogero went on to have exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Japan, as well as countless exhibits in Paris and Italy. Maximilien Gauthier wrote a book about Colgero entitled "The Gemini" in 1954. In 1957, he received the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris.
The Moulin Rouge famously captivated French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) who painted a number of works depicting the cabaret in his signature Post Impressionist style. The Moulin Rouge was also the subject of a successful film (2001) and jukebox musical (2018), set at the turn of the 20th century during the Belle Epoque. Written by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, the story was about a Christian composer who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge named Satine.
