Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. 1950s CE. A charming handmade doll, the interior body carved from caribou bone and dressed in caribou and fox fur. The bone is whittled into delineated legs, a cylindrical body, with the arms clasped in front, small indentations and black pigments for the navel and nipples. The rounded head has a small, protruding nose and painted lips, eyes, and eyebrows. The clothing slips over the doll in two sections, the pants and parka, perfectly fitting the body. The pants are made from arctic fox; the fur has a brown undercoat with white tips, and the parka is made of caribou hide with fox trim around the hem and hood. The doll is adorable and demonstrates the skilled sewing and traditional use of arctic materials. Size: 6.5" L x 1.75" W (16.5 cm x 4.4 cm)
