Central Europe, Austria, ca. 1915 to present CE. A gold bullion 4 ducats coin with the mint year 1915, with a high gold fineness of 98.6% (equivalent to 23K+). These large gold ducats were originally used for transactions between countries, their mintage ceasing in 1915 due to metal shortages during World War I, but in 1920 production of the coins continued until 1936 with the year 1915 stamped on all years and indistinguishable from the original issue. Again, World War II halted ducat production, but in 1950 restriking resumed with the frozen 1915 year. The obverse features the laureate, armored bust of Franz Joseph I, "FRANC IOS I D G AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR" (Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God, Austrian Emperor). The reverse contains the Hapsburg coat of arms- a double-headed eagle, "HVNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A 1915 (4)" (King of Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia and Lodomeria, Illyria, Archduke of Austria).
