Eastern Europe, Russia, Moscow, Imperial Period, ca. 1908 to 1917 CE. Wow! A beautiful set of three 91.5% silver and gold wash serving vessels known as kovsh, each with a boat shaped body adorned with cloisonne patterns and a tray to rest upon. The rectangular footed tray is comprised of 93.3% silver with gold wash as well, and supported by four clawed feet. The cloisonne pattern on the base and the kovsh consists of floral and geometric shapes in hues of green, blue, yellow, and pink on a white ground with rope and twist designs in silver. Hallmarks are stamped on the base of each kovsch and on the pedestal. The first mark is "20A" within a rectangle which is the maker's mark for the 20th Artel, a cooperative of artisans skilled in different crafts that came together to produce these incredible pieces. The other hallmark is a face in profile to the right of the numbers "88" for the Russian sterling silver standard implemented by Tsar Nicholas II in 1908. Kovsh are traditional drinking vessels with shapes that may reflect Viking longships. Over the ages their designs and materials became more ornate, and pieces like this set eventually became symbolic gifts presented by the Tsar to important members of government or citizens. A stunning ensemble! Size of pedestal: 6.5" L x 2.125" W x .75" H (16.5 cm x 5.4 cm x 1.9 cm); kovsh: 3.125" W x 1.125" H (7.9 cm x 2.9 cm); quality of silver: 91.5% to 93.3%; quality of gold: .5% to 1.4%; total weight: 272.15 grams
