A first edition of "Moon-Face and Other Stories" written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) and published by The Macmillan Company in September 1906. Comprised of 273 pages with a gilt top edge, the lovely book is covered in its original blue cloth featuring cream, yellow, and gilt floral illustration and cream lettering on the cover and spine. The fascinating title story of the book explores the subject of extreme antipathy, telling the tale of an unnamed protagonist who has an irrational hatred for a man with a "moon-face" named John Claverhouse. Other stories included are: "The Leopard Man's Story," "Local Color," "Amateur Night," "The Minions of Midas," "The Shadow and the Flash," "All Gold Canyon," and "Planchette." Though the short story of "Moon-Face" was first published in "The Argonaut" newspaper on July 21st, 1902, Macmillan published the first book edition of the tale in New York in 1906.
Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.
