Josef Maria Olbrich (Austrian, 1867-1908) for Eduard Hueck (German manufacturer, established 1864). Pewter wine / schnaps decanter, ca. 1900. Stamped with JO (Josef Olbrich) monogram and circular 1865 Hueck cartouche on base. A gorgeous Art Nouveau peacock decanter designed by Austrian decorative artist Joseph Maria Olbrich, a leader of the Vienna Secessionists, for the German manufacturer Edward Hueck. The decanter presents with an elegant geometrical form inspired by the shape of a peacock. The lid represents the peacock's comb and beak, and the hinge joining the lid to the mouth of the vessel enables the "beak" to open as one pours from the vessel. The peacock's distinct plumage patterns are rendered with bas relief circles and spirals below the handle. This model, with its elegant form and attractive ornamental relief, was exhibited at the Kunstler Kolonie Darmstadt as well as the St. Louis Worlds' Fair of 1904. A beautiful example of Josef Maria Olbrich's coveted peacock decanter. Size: 4.375" L x 4.125" W x 13.125" H (11.1 cm x 10.5 cm x 33.3 cm)
