Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 8500 BCE to 1800 CE (10500 to 200 BP). An intriguing collection of preformed tools or projectile points all hand-knapped from stone. Most appear to be the beginning stages of forming a projectile point with a triangular blade, but the stem or neck is unfinished. Some of the preforms have identifiable characteristics that indicate the eventual typology of the final point. Included in this collection are: Agate Basin, Waubesa, Dalton, Kirk, Gary, Desmuke, Hells Canyon, Guilford, Rockwall, Johnson, Turkey Trail, Little River, Mehlville, Adena, Rose Springs, St. Albans, and Hernando. The Dalton type is made from a Pitkin chert stone which is of a pretty gray and blue color. The Hells Canyon preform has starter notches on the sides for creating the shoulders and stem. Preforms are an interesting look into the process of shaping the stones into the complete projectile point. Preforms may be unfinished for many reasons; sometimes these tools are discarded when a mistake is made while knapping or a flaw is discovered in the stone matrix. Size of largest tool: 4" L x 2.5" W (10.2 cm x 6.4 cm); size of case: 16" L x 1" W x 12" H (40.6 cm x 2.5 cm x 30.5 cm)
