Artist: Gaspar Dughet Poussin (French, born in Rome, 1615-1675). Engraver: Francois Vivares (French, 1709-1780). "A Land Storm" engraving, 18th century. A beautiful hand-colored engraving of Gaspar Dughet Poussin's landscape entitled "A Land Storm". The composition includes several figures enduring the elements as the wind blows. The scene is at once picturesque and sublime. Note how the tree to the far left is bending due to the blustery squall, and the tree beside it has already lost its boughs and appears as a blasted tree trunk. Gaspar Dughet studied under Nicolas Poussin, who was also his brother-in-law, from 1631 to 1635. Due to this association, he was referred to as Gaspar Poussin. He would become known for a fluid style and images of stormy landscapes. Size of image: 19.5" W x 14" H (49.5 cm x 35.6 cm) Size of matte: 25.25" W x 20.125" H (64.1 cm x 51.1 cm)
Vivares was one of the most important engravers of landscapes. Although born in France, Vivares moved to England when he was 18 years old. In England, he grew enamored with landscaes and went on to become an influential landscape engraver. This beautiful hand colored engraving is laid down and has a little damage but is mostly in good condition.
