Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A wonderful gilt copper alloy figure of the bodhisattva Manjushri, whose name translates as "Beautiful One with Glory," adorned with turquoise-colored enamel inlays. Seated in dhysansana on a lotus throne, he holds aloft a flaming sword representing the realization of transcendent wisdom which cuts down ignorance and duality in his raised right hand and a lotus stem in his left. His body is clad in a voluminous dhoti adorned with sashes and elaborate jewelry, while his face remains serene, surmounted by a foliate tiara in front of a piled top bun. This dynamic gilt-copper alloy figure of Manjushri is rare for the virtuosity of the casting technique and the expressive vitality of the figure itself. Displaying a fine attention to detail in the treatment of the robes and jewelry, the figure is also depicted with supple proportions that characterize the finest 18th-century Chinese figures. Size: 4" L x 7.4" W x 8.7" H (10.2 cm x 18.8 cm x 22.1 cm)
The scripture supported by the padma (lotus) held in his left hand is a Prajnaparamita sutra, representing his attainment of ultimate realization from the blossoming of wisdom.
Manjushri, often referred to as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, is a revered figure in Mahayana Buddhism, symbolizing the perfection of transcendent wisdom (prajna). He is typically depicted holding a flaming sword in his right hand, which cuts through ignorance and illusion, and a sacred text - the Prajnaparamita Sutra - in his left, representing the profound teachings of ultimate truth. In Buddhist traditions, Manjushri is regarded as an embodiment of insight and clarity, aiding practitioners in their journey toward enlightenment. He is particularly associated with scholars, meditators, and those seeking higher knowledge. Legends suggest that Manjushri's wisdom is so vast that he was even considered a Buddha in some esoteric traditions. His presence is especially venerated in Tibetan Buddhism, where he is invoked for blessings of wisdom and eloquence.
