Spanish Colonial, South America, probably Peru or Bolivia, ca. 18th century CE. A fine collection of 4 hammered silver vessels: a mug, a chalice, and 2 bowls. First, the mug presents a cylindrical body with a folded rim and a vertical, ribbon-form handle incised with a vegetal design, all sitting upon a planar base. Next, the chalice exhibits a conical foot supporting a bulbous body with an elongated, flared neck and an ovoid rim flanked by a pair of zoomorphic and phytomorphic handles. Abstract incised decorations adorn the exterior of the foot, body, and neck. Last, the pair of bowls display differing forms; 1 has a discoid foot, a rounded bottom, curved walls, and an annular rim, while the other features a flat base and walls that flare outwards to a wide rim. The rim of each bowl is additionally embellished by a pair of intricately formed handles in the shape of animals atop vines. Size of largest: 5.8" Diameter x 3.9" H (14.7 cm x 9.9 cm); silver quality (for largest): 92.3%; total weight: 291.2 grams
The larger bowl is stamped with the letters "M L" on its base, which are likely the initials of the maker or owner of the dish.
