Spanish Colonial, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A captivating oil on canvas painting of The Virgen del Carmen (Nuestra Senora del Carmen) finely painted to represent her role as protector. Holding the Christ Child, she clasps the scapular in her right hand, while the Child holds a cross in his right hand and reaches for the Virgin with his left. The Virgin also wears the shield of the Carmelite Order featuring a cross on a mound over her chest. Furthermore, the colors of her robe and cape identify her as the Virgen del Carmen. The pair are surrounded by a halo of stars and glow in the holy light of the celestial realm. Finally, the Virgin and Child present with nearly white skin, alluding to the Spanish/European influence on this piece. A beautiful painting set in a golden wood frame with a beige velvet moulding. Size of painting: 17" L x 14.5" W (43.2 cm x 36.8 cm) Size of frame: 21.875" L x 19.625" W (55.6 cm x 49.8 cm)

Condition
Painting presents normal age wear with some abraded areas, losses to pigment, a small tear (about .75" long) at upper right (in the background of the composition), and craquelure throughout. Outlines of stretchers are visible in the composition and waviness to canvas could be remedied if relined. Frame dates later than the painting but also shows slight age wear. Wired for suspension and ready to hang.
