South America, ca. 18th century. An excellent carved wooden crucifix painted black on a tiered base with three round feet and top pedestal featuring an expertly sculpted bovine bone Christ. The Christian savior turns his thorn-crowned head downward to his right, his bearded face solemnly in repose as his long hair falls on his back. With both arms and feet nailed to the cross, each of his hand holds up his middle and index fingers - a Christian sign for blessing. He appears emaciated, as his ribs are clearly delineated above a concave stomach, while his hips turn to his right in a typical Baroque "S" curve and hold up a small loin cloth. The remarkable pale white hue of the ungulate bone against the black cross gives the deity a sense of the ethereal and highlights his purity. Size: 5.625" L x 3.75" W x 14.875" H (14.3 cm x 9.5 cm x 37.8 cm)
A slab of bovine bone hangs above the defeated Son of God, likely previously inscribed with "INRI" (Latin for "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews"). A skull and cross bones also of bone can be seen below him. These bones represent the bones of Adam, as some believe Jesus was crucified above his burial site. Whether or not he was, the morbid representation is meant to remind those lamenting on this cross that Christ died for the sins of man, including Adam's original sin in the Garden of Eden.
